1/11/12

To kick off the quarter we will be learning ten base culture words. We are using these words as "categories" of culture.  As we do research, create projects, and hold cultural discussions, we will use these words as our common language, as a way to organize our thoughts about the cultures we are studying.

WORD WALL

                                       belief                                       practice

                                      culture                                     product

                                     custom                                      religion

                                     perspective                               tradition

                                     philosophy                                value

Other things we will be doing this quarter....

We will be  planning our "spring vacation" to a Latin American country.  From the country's customs, traditions, practices, and values to exchanging money, we are planning a trip and using Keynote to present our plan. Check back for photos and quotes. :-)

 One of the most interesting things we will learn this quarter is some Quechua, a Native American language spoken in South American countries such as Peru, Bolivia, Ecuador, and regions of Colombia and Argentina. It was the official languguage of the Incan Empire and it has some 10 million speakers today. Here is the vocabulary we have learned as of late:

...mi suti = My name is ___.

iman sutiky = What is your name?

maypi kanki = Where is it?

jaku ripusum = Let's go together

imanallaya = How are you?

allilamni =  I am good

hayqa can = How much does it cost?

mikunata munani = I'm hungry.

unata munani = I am thirsty.

chirishani = I'm cold.

coñishani = I'm too warm.

The students will use the above words and phrases to write a dialogue in Quechua which they will perform for the class for a project grade.

  The AYMARA vocabulary list we are using in class can be accessed through "Links" found at the end of the menu options. Click on "Aymara". We are learning "Greetings" and "Frequently Used Vocabulary". Check out the other categories of Aymara vocabulary available on this site and try it out with your families. Teach a sibling a word or two! :-)
